Graph Paper

Need a few sheets of graph paper right now? Pick the square size and paper, then print. This free printable graph paper comes out at true size, so 1/4 inch squares really measure 1/4 inch, on US Letter or A4, as a classic grid or dot paper. Save it as a PDF if you want to print it later.

In the print dialog, keep the scale at 100% (Actual size) and choose the same paper size. For a graph paper PDF, pick Save as PDF as the printer.

How to print graph paper

  1. Pick the square size. 1/4 inch graph paper is the US school standard; 5 mm graph paper is the usual choice on A4; 1 cm graph paper suits young kids and big diagrams.
  2. Choose the paper and orientation that match the paper in your printer.
  3. Choose a color. Light blue and gray stay in the background when you write on top; black is best for photocopies.
  4. Press Print graph paper. In the dialog, set the scale to 100% or Actual size and print as many copies as you need.

Each sheet stops about 1/4 inch from the edges, because most printers can't print to the very edge, and only whole squares are drawn, so every square is the same size.

Which grid size should you use?

GridGood for
1/4 inch (4 per inch)School math, graphing equations, floor plans at the common 1/4 inch = 1 foot scale
1/5 inch and 1/10 inchScience charts and engineering sketches where tenths are easier to read
1/8 inchDetailed drawings, pixel art and cross-stitch or knitting charts
1 mm and 2 mmTechnical drawing and precise measurements
5 mmEveryday grid paper on A4, notes, dot grid bullet journals
1 cm and 1 inchYoung children, big diagrams, board game maps

Turn on Darker line every inch or cm to make counting easier: every fourth line on 1/4 inch paper, every tenth line on 1 mm paper. Switch the style to dot grid when you want structure with less ink on the page.

Printable graph paper that measures correctly

Most graph paper printable downloads are fixed PDFs, and many get scaled by the printer and come out a little too small. This grid paper is drawn in real millimeters and inches, and the page size is set for you, so it prints at true size as long as the scale stays at 100%. To check, measure four squares of 1/4 inch paper with a ruler: they should measure exactly 1 inch. If they come out short, the print dialog was set to Fit to page.

Printing a lot? Graph paper uses very little ink, especially in light blue or as dots. If your lines look faint or broken, run a printer test page first to check the ink and print head.

How we tested this tool

We printed the graph paper to PDF with Microsoft Edge on Windows and measured the file: the page is exactly US Letter, one drawing unit equals 1 mm (2.8346 points), and the lines of 1/4 inch paper are 6.35 mm apart, so the squares are true size. The sheet fits on one page with 32 × 42 squares on Letter and 39 × 56 squares of 5 mm on A4. We also printed the dot grid version and checked every option, the layout at a 375 px phone width and that Ctrl+P prints the current paper. We haven't yet printed it on a range of real printers ourselves. If you print some, tell us how it came out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common graph paper size?

In the US, 1/4 inch graph paper, with 4 squares per inch, is the standard for school math. Most of the world uses 5 mm squares on A4. Engineers and model makers often use 1 mm or 1/10 inch grids.

How do I make sure the squares print at the right size?

In the print dialog set the scale to 100% or Actual size, not Fit to page, and pick the same paper size you chose here. Then measure a few squares with a ruler: 4 squares of 1/4 inch graph paper should measure exactly 1 inch.

Can I download the graph paper as a PDF?

Yes. Press Print graph paper and choose Save as PDF or Microsoft Print to PDF as the printer. The PDF keeps the true size, so you can print it again later.

Why is there a white border around the grid?

Most printers can't print right to the edge of the paper, so the grid stops about 1/4 inch from each edge and only whole squares are printed. That keeps every square complete and the same size.

What is dot grid paper used for?

Dot grid paper gives you the structure of a grid with less ink on the page. It is popular for bullet journals, sketching, handwriting practice and diagrams. 5 mm dots are the most common choice.
