Spacebar Counter

How many times can you hit the spacebar in 10 seconds? Pick a time, start pressing and this spacebar counter shows your total, your presses per second and how your speed held up second by second.

How the spacebar counter works

  1. Choose a time: 5, 10, 30 or 60 seconds, or Free count to simply count presses with no limit.
  2. Start pressing. The timer starts with your first press, so you don't lose time reaching for the key. On a phone or tablet, tap the big space key on the page.
  3. Read the result. When time runs out you get the total, the average presses per second and a bar for every second of the run.
  4. Press Enter or Reset to try again. Your best score for each mode is kept in this browser.

Holding the spacebar down doesn't help: the automatic repeats your computer sends while a key is held are ignored, so only real presses count.

What is a good score?

For a reference point, clinical one-finger tapping tests usually record about 45 to 55 taps in 10 seconds for adults. A spacebar is bigger and you can use two fingers, so scores here tend to be higher.

Per secondIn 10 secondsWhat it means
under 4.5under 45Below typical one-finger tapping. Warm up first.
4.5–645–60Around the typical one-finger rate.
6–860–80Fast. Usually means a good technique.
8–1080–100Very fast.
over 10over 100Extremely rare over a full 10 seconds.

Look at the bars after a 30 or 60-second run: most people start strong and slow down after 10–15 seconds as the forearm tires. Flat bars mean steady endurance.

Tips to press the spacebar faster

Take a break if your hand or wrist starts to hurt; a high score isn't worth a sore wrist.

Use it to check your spacebar

The counter is also a quick hardware check. If you tap at an even pace and the count goes up unevenly, or presses get lost, the spacebar switch or its stabilizer may be worn. Run the keyboard test to look for keys that miss or type twice. For reaction speed instead of tapping speed, try the reaction time test.

How we tested this tool

We sent simulated key presses in Chrome and checked the result: 50 presses spread over a 10-second run gave 50 presses and 5.0 per second, held-key repeats added nothing, presses after the timer ended were ignored, the per-second bars added up to the total, the best score was kept after a reload, and taps on the on-screen key counted the same as key presses. The rating bands are based on published one-finger tapping test norms, not on our own study.

Frequently asked questions

Does holding the spacebar count?

No. When you hold a key, the computer repeats it automatically, and those repeats are ignored. Only real presses, where you let go and press again, are counted.

What is a good spacebar counter score?

One-finger tapping tests usually land around 45 to 55 taps in 10 seconds for adults, about 4.5 to 5.5 per second. With two fingers or alternating thumbs on the spacebar, 7 to 9 per second is a strong score, and more than 10 per second is very rare.

Can I use the spacebar counter on a phone?

Yes. Tap the large space key on the page. Each tap is counted as soon as your finger touches the screen, so it works the same way as a key press. A connected Bluetooth keyboard also works.

Why did a press not count?

Presses after the timer ends are ignored, and so are repeats from a held key. If presses go missing while you tap normally, your keyboard may have a worn spacebar switch; check it with the keyboard test.

Is my best score saved?
