How to run the camera and mic test
- Press "Start camera and mic" and allow access when the browser asks. One prompt covers both devices.
- Look at the preview. If you see yourself, the camera works. The line under the picture shows the real resolution, the frame rate and the camera's name.
- Talk at your normal volume. The bar should move with your voice and the status turns green once sound is detected.
- Press "Record 10 s", say a sentence, and listen to the playback. This is how you will sound to others, minus the call app's own processing.
- Have more than one camera or microphone? Pick another one from the lists and the test switches instantly.
Online webcam test: what the numbers mean
This online webcam test asks your camera for 1920 × 1080 and reports what it actually delivers, so you see the real figure rather than the one on the box.
| Result | What it means |
|---|---|
| 640 × 480 | Older or very basic webcam (VGA). Fine for calls, soft on a large screen. |
| 1280 × 720 | 720p HD – the most common laptop camera. |
| 1920 × 1080 | 1080p Full HD – most external USB webcams. |
| 30 fps | Smooth, normal video. |
| 15 fps or less | Usually too little light: the camera slows down to collect more light per frame. |
Want a picture to compare lighting or framing? "Save a photo" downloads one still at full resolution, created on your device.
Online mic test with playback
The level bar shows the raw signal from your microphone, with the browser's echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain switched off, so you see what the hardware really picks up. When you talk normally the bar should move well into the green. If it barely moves, raise the input volume in your system settings; if it hits red on ordinary speech, lower it a little.
The mic test playback is the most honest check: you hear exactly what the microphone captured, including hum, hiss or a muffled sound from a covered mic. The mic test recorder keeps the clip in your browser's memory only; it is gone as soon as you leave or reload the page.
Camera not working? Fixes in order
- Browser permission: click the camera or lock icon next to the address, set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then reload.
- Another app is using it: close Zoom, Teams, Skype, OBS or the Camera app. On Windows only one app can usually use a webcam at a time.
- Windows privacy settings: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera (and Microphone) → turn on access for apps and for desktop apps.
- Mac: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera (and Microphone) → enable your browser, then restart the browser.
- Hardware: many laptops have a privacy shutter or a camera key (often F8 or F10 with a crossed-out camera). Plug USB webcams straight into the computer, not into a hub.
Microphone not working? Check these
- The status says the mic sends pure silence: it is muted somewhere – a headset switch, a mute key, or the input muted in system sound settings.
- The level is very low: on Windows open Settings → System → Sound → Input and raise the input volume; on Mac use System Settings → Sound → Input.
- Wrong device: pick the right microphone from the list. Webcams often have their own mic that becomes the default.
- Bluetooth headsets sound worse when their mic is in use, because they switch to a hands-free mode with lower audio quality. A wired headset or the laptop mic often sounds better on calls.
To see how loud a room is rather than whether the mic works, use the decibel meter. To check that your headphones play on the right sides, try the left right audio test.
How we tested this tool
We tested the page in a desktop browser and at a 375 px phone width by replacing the real camera and microphone with generated streams: an animated test image for the camera and a tone for the mic. We checked that the reported resolution and frame rate match the generated video, that the mic status turns green when sound is present and warns about pure silence, and that a 10-second recording plays back. We haven't yet checked it with a range of real webcams; if something looks wrong on your device, tell us.
Frequently asked questions
Is this webcam and mic test safe? Is anything recorded or uploaded?
Everything runs in your browser. The video preview and the 10-second test recording stay in your device's memory and are never sent anywhere. The recording disappears when you close or reload the page.
Why does my webcam show a lower resolution than advertised?
The test asks for 1920 × 1080 and shows what the camera actually delivers. Many laptop cameras top out at 1280 × 720, and some browsers or USB 2.0 hubs limit the resolution. Video-call apps often send even less to save bandwidth.
Why is my frame rate low?
Most webcams aim for 30 fps, but in dim light they slow down to 15 fps or less to collect more light per frame. Turn on a lamp facing you and the frame rate usually goes back up.
The mic test shows a level but people can't hear me in calls. Why?
The call app is probably using a different microphone. Open its audio settings and pick the same device that works here, and check that you aren't muted inside the app or with a headset switch.
Does the camera and mic test work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Open the page in Safari on iPhone or Chrome on Android, tap Start camera and mic and allow access. Use the camera list to switch between the front and back cameras.
